On 20th October, 2023, CRESA had the incredible opportunity to visit Build X, a leader in sustainable construction right here in Nairobi. As students with a passion for innovative building methods and environmental sustainability, this visit was a true eye-opener.
During the visit, we got a firsthand look at the incredible work they do with mass timber construction. The precision, sustainability, and aesthetics of their projects left us inspired. Their commitment to using locally sourced materials and sustainable practices is not only good for the environment but also for the local economy.
We are thankful for the warm welcome we received from Maryem Sadek, the mass timber initiative manager. We got to learn about their experiences, challenges, and the future of sustainable construction in Kenya. This experience has enriched our understanding of the industry.
A huge shoutout to Build X for opening their doors to us and for being pioneers in sustainable construction. 🏗️🌿 #SustainableConstruction#MassTimber
On the 18th of October 2023, the Construction and Real Estate Students Association (CRESA) embarked on a journey of environmental responsibility and community engagement. Teaming up with the Department of Real Estate, Construction Management, and Quantity Survey, as well as the esteemed KCB Bank, CRESA took part in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity that involved planting 500 trees to foster a sustainable future.
From 2 pm to 5 pm, CRESA, students, faculty members, and representatives from KCB Bank converged at the University of Nairobi Graduation Square for a tree-planting event that went beyond environmental actions. It was a celebration of shared values, collaboration, and a united vision for a healthier planet.
The event commenced with a gathering at the heart of the university, where voices were raised and spirits were united. Short yet poignant speeches emphasized the importance of environmental conservation. It was an opportunity to remind everyone that small actions can lead to profound change, echoing the famous words of Wangari Maathai, "It's the little things citizens do. That's what will make the difference, my little thing is planting TREES."
The act of planting 500 trees may seem small in the grand scheme of global environmental issues, but it serves as a testament to the commitment of CRESA, the Department, and KCB Bank in making a positive impact. Every tree planted contributes to cleaner air, a healthier ecosystem, and a more sustainable future for generations to come.
The CSR event not only had environmental significance but also fostered deeper connections between students, the department, and corporate partners. It showcased the power of unity and the potential for change when diverse stakeholders work together towards a common goal.
CRESA's involvement in this tree-planting event on the 18th of October 2023 is a testament to our mission of leaving a green legacy. By working together, they showed that positive change can begin with "the little things" - like planting trees. This event will be remembered as a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable tomorrow.

IX. Recommendations for Future Initiatives
In his writing, Steven Spielberg highlights that the most delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves. As we move forward, we recommend continued support for programs, mentorships and events that would promote students’ participation in fostering diversity and inclusion in the built environment. Our young talents are the industry holders of tomorrow. Therefore, developing in them great skills, knowledge and expertise would ensure a more sustainable future, with gender balance and inclusion at the core of the professionalism.

I was delighted to come together for a memorable dinner with women representing diverse backgrounds from across the African continent. The evening's theme revolved around 'Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,' a subject of significant importance for any organization striving to champion for equal opportunities for women, particularly in the dynamic realm of the built environment.
Representing CRESA (Construction and Real Estate Students Association) from the Department of Real Estate, Quantity Surveying, and Construction Management, I felt honored to be part of this significant gathering. The purpose behind this dinner was multifaceted: to facilitate an open conversation where women at the conference could share their personal experiences, envision a more inclusive future for the industry, and, most importantly, empower the young women and students attending the conference to assert their presence in this field.
CRESA representation
One of the most notable moments of the evening was the recognition of the countless challenges women face in advancing their careers. From navigating discrimination to balancing family responsibilities, education, promotions, and work experiences, these women have encountered numerous hurdles on their path to success.
From the perspective of a female student, the road ahead may seem uncertain, but gatherings like this women's dinner reveal that these challenges are shared by many. We bear the responsibility for shaping our own futures, and confidence in our abilities is key. The opportunities meant for us will inevitably find us if we remain prepared to seize them.
I am deeply grateful for the privilege of attending this dinner. To occupy such a role at a young age provided invaluable insights and inspiration. The mentorship offered at the dinner was exceptional, with a group of like-minded women coming together to guide and ensure greater female representation within the industry.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Madam Catherine Kariuki, whose commendable efforts in planning the dinner were instrumental in its success.
