Behind the Scenes: AAK Explores the World of Furniture Making and Fittings
Hello, dear readers!
Today I share highlights of the Architectural Association of Kenya's (AAK) recent industrial visit to Furniture International held on September 27th, 2024. This event was a remarkable blend of education, exploration, and networking.
A Day of Learning
The day began as students from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Technical University of Kenya (TUK), and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), along with recent graduates and seasoned professionals all from different AAK chapters, gathered at the AAK headquarters with eager anticipation of the day´s activities. Our collective enthusiasm was hardly containable, setting the stage for a day rich in learning and discovery.
Inside Furniture International
On arrival, the group received a warm welcome from the business development team at Furniture International. The display of their products next to their reception was truly remarkable. Right from ballroom seats and doors to beds in a show bedroom. A video presentation of one their projects was already playing on the T.V for our indulgence. We embarked on a fascinating tour of the production facilities, witnessing the entire furniture-making process right from the arrival of timber and boards, cutting of the timber/boards, joinery, sanding, priming, drying etc. right to the unveiling of the final product, ready for clients. The precision and craftsmanship on display was truly inspiring. All questions on the products and process were clearly and thoroughly addressed.
A Special Treat
As a very welcome bonus, the visit included a presentation by Häfele, a renowned supplier of furniture hardware and fittings. The General Manager of Häfele, William Mutambo, graciously showcased their range of products, explained their warranties, and patiently answered all our questions. This added a valuable dimension to our visit, opening up our understanding of the furniture industry.
A Heartfelt Thank You
A sincere thankyou is in order to the AAK team; Rodah Boyani, Meeshack Otieno, and Brendah Nyawara for organizing this insightful tour. Special thanks goes to the Furniture International team; Dishon Mwanza, Nick Mungai and Margaret Munyui, and of course, William Mutambo from Häfele for being such gracious and informative hosts. The visit very dearly enhanced our understanding of the furniture and fittings industry.
Stay inspired!
Warm regards, Elvin Gitari.
